About this data and methodology
All statistics are based on the HMDA Modified Loan Application Register — the most comprehensive public dataset of U.S. mortgage originations. We include only originated first-lien purchase mortgages on owner-occupied principal residences, and only rows where rate and cost fields are reported (not exempt or missing). We use medians, not averages, to reduce the influence of outliers. Lenders must have 500+ purchase originations nationally to appear in national rankings, 50+ for state rankings, and 10+ for county rankings.
